Taking the most out of Unmetered Hosting

Hosting companies are increasingly offering ‘Unmetered Hosting’ which on paper means that the do not track the amount of data usage against you nor penalize you for any overages since there is no imposed cap on data usage. But often, this is not the case. Most of the Hosting companies will track your data usage. If your data use exceeds their data transfer limits with their ISP, your server can be shut down.

So, if you sign-up for an unmetered hosting plan, are you really free to use as much data as you want?

Well, Yes and No.

Yes No
The hosting company clearly states that they offer unmetered data transfer. But there is a catch. Be sure to read the fine print surrounding ‘resource abuse.’ Anything above a certain limit can flag your account. Data transmission is measured in port speed. Port speed controls how much data can be transferred at any second. The most common speeds are: 1Mbps/10Mbps/100Mbps. This equates to about 320GB/3200GB/32000GB of total data per month.

Don’t Get Oversold

Finally, when selecting a hosting company, make sure they will stand by what they say. Most companies do not outright disclose true data limits – they have it buried deep within a service level agreement. In order to get the most out your server, always ask for the highest port speed to take full advantage of the service. Here at 3EX Hosting our minimum port speed is 100 Mbps. Feel free to ping it and check latency to the best results for your clients.
